Studies of present-day hunter-gatherer societies as well as genomic research support the idea that humans within these societies are highly mobile and commonly travel long distances to settle in communities apart from their biological kin. Even among peoples that organize socially around common descent from a totemic ancestor, primary biological connection often makes up a small fraction of total group membership.
